Maine in May - 5 Days in Maine 2023 - Day 1

Shell Yeah! Let's Eat Lobster!

Day 1

Hey, y’all! We are so excited to kick off our 1st series of Season 2!!!! We had such a good time planning new content, reliving memories, and look forward to making new ones along the way :)

Maine was a bucket list item for me, especially because it was the last trip I was hoping to take with my Grandma Betty. Unfortunately, her health would not permit it, so I knew I wanted to save it for a special time.

That special time was supposed to be for mine and Alex’s 15th anniversary. But then…covid. UGH!

We wound up having our 15th anniversary on our 18th anniversary and got to add to the fun by spending half of the trip with great friends.

This trip was truly all about location, friendship, food and flowers!

Day 1 overview:

•  Eat a divine breakfast in Portland

•  Get my boot pic and explore L.L. Bean in Freeport

•  Eat first lobster roll of the trip on a boat in Boothbay Harbor

•  Drive the loop to Ocean Point and take in the views

•  Finish the day in Bath

Let’s get into it!

Nom

That really says it all, right???

Nom or nom nom nom? A pleasurable experience of eating. Or, what about the expression of pleasure with the food you are eating?
A few specific notes:

•  The chai was delicious

•  The yogurt dish is what I had-banana, berries, coconut yogurt, honey, granola and coconut flakes

•  The atmosphere was historic, chill and artsy

Location: 23 Forest Ave.

L.L. Bean

I’m not sure why it was so important for me to go here. Or to get a picture with the boot. But it was.

I had no idea it would be so BIG. The flowers were in absolute bloom and very well maintained. In addition, I had several photo ops with moose (IYKYK).

I stand by my original plan and recommend going. It’s worth the extra hour drive, honest.

Boothbay Harbor

This town was on our friends list and I’m so glad we went. The town was truly serene.

It was in bloom (did y’all notice those unique window boxes??), the weather was perfect (it was in the 60s) and we had a great time exploring.

It was pretty cool to eat our first lobster roll on Day 1-but even cooler to eat it on a boat! Boothbay Harbor has a docked boat turned restaurant and it just added to the experience :)

After lunch, we drove the loop to Ocean Point and took in some fantastic views. I mean, I feel like there are times when my camera does not do justice.

We did notice there was quite the sharp smell from tons of washed-up seaweed. In addition, we encountered skunk cabbage.
What exactly is skunk cabbage? I decided to look it up and found that the articles all agree that it smells. Other interesting facts: no two plants look the same, they are able to generate their own heat, many have maroon-colored leaves and they get the attention of early pollinators!

Bath

This town is known as the City of Ships. Shipbuilding and related businesses/industries have shaped this town since the mid-1700s. This heritage continues today at Bath Iron Works, one of the nation's leading shipbuilders for the U.S. Navy.

Bath received its city charter in 1847. If you are a history buff, you can learn more about the town here: Bath History — Bath Historical Society
The resource below is great to use for planning a trip and provides a very detailed map of the area.

We ate dinner at Bruno’s Wood Fired Pizza out on the back terrace. We indulged in ice cream at The Fountain and recommend both places.
