10-Day Alaskan Cruise - Skagway

Cold rain. Wet pants. Warm train car.

It was rainy, cold and miserable for our Skagway stop. In addition, I didn't dress properly and only had a cheap poncho that kept dropping rainwater on my plum colored rayoney-silky pants. NOT a good look! (brrrrr and grrrrr)

At the Skagway stop we shopped a little, but again, it was miserable. Did I mention? Cold. Wet. Not dressed properly.

After shopping, we had tickets for the White Pass Scenic Railway. The White Pass & Yukon Route Railway is a historic train experience established in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush. It goes through Alaska's beautiful landscapes, like mountains, glaciers, and gorges. It provides an engaging and educational experience for visitors, with opportunities to learn about the Gold Rush era while enjoying panoramic views.

The staff were knowledgeable and entertaining as they told us about the history of the area.

While it was beautiful, the windows kept fogging up. You could leave the window or door open and freeze, to have clear windows. You could also be adventurous and go out on the platform (and freeze) and added bonus, have cold rain dropping on you that was rolling off from the top of the roof of the train. Florida girl says no.

I tell you this because I wish I had done a little better with the prep and gotten a lightweight rainsuit or at least a jacket with a hood. I just felt like I didn't have enough room in my suitcase. In addition, I'm very used to Florida rain - - - "Don't like the weather in Florida? Just wait 15 minutes!" However, this was NOT Florida rain.

Regardless of the challenges- I would definitely recommend taking the train to see untouched Alaskan wilderness and to hear about what the pioneers went thru.

Kudos thrown to my SIL Marcia for the pictures AND video below!

  Thanks Marcia for the photos!
