From Valencia to the World: A Semester That Changed My Life

I’m Lauren, and for one unforgettable semester I had the opportunity to study abroad with Florida State University in Valencia, Spain. What began as a chance to take classes overseas quickly turned into an experience that challenged me, inspired me, and completely changed the way I see the world.

For four months, Valencia became home. During the week, I attended classes, explored the city’s colorful neighborhoods, practiced my Spanish, and embraced the slower Mediterranean lifestyle. On weekends, Europe became my classroom. By the end of the semester, I had traveled to Spain, France, Italy, Vatican City, Monaco, Germany, Austria, Hungary, England, Denmark, Ireland, Morocco, and the Czech Republic.

Looking back, I realize it wasn’t just about the places I visited—it was about the memories I made in each one.

Valencia, Spain

There is something special about calling another country home.

Valencia welcomed me with sunshine, orange trees lining the streets, beautiful architecture, incredible food, and a culture that encouraged people to slow down and truly enjoy life. Some of my favorite memories were the simplest ones—walking through Old Town after class, watching the sunset at Malvarrosa Beach, enjoying tapas with friends, and wandering through local markets with no destination in mind.

Living in Spain taught me that not every moment has to be rushed. Sometimes the best experiences happen when you simply explore.

Weekend Adventures

One of the greatest parts of studying abroad was how easy it was to experience so many different cultures. Every weekend felt like a new adventure.

In Italy, history surrounded us at every turn. Walking through Rome and stepping inside Vatican City was surreal. Standing in St. Peter’s Basilica is something I’ll never forget.

Monaco felt glamorous, with luxury yachts, beautiful views along the Mediterranean, and streets that looked like they belonged in a movie.

Austria and Hungary amazed me with their stunning architecture, historic landmarks, and beautiful Christmas lights beginning to appear throughout the cities.

England was full of iconic landmarks that I’d only ever seen in pictures, while France felt effortlessly elegant with its cafés, architecture, and charm.

One of the most magical parts of traveling later in the semester was visiting Denmark and Ireland as Christmas approached. The streets sparkled with lights, holiday markets filled the city squares, and everything felt straight out of a Christmas movie. Walking through beautifully decorated streets with a warm drink in hand made the holiday season feel even more special, especially while being so far from home.

Germany: Oktoberfest and History

Germany was one of the highlights of my semester abroad.

I had the opportunity to experience Oktoberfest, something that had been on my bucket list for years. The atmosphere was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced—traditional music, people from all over the world, incredible food, and a celebration of Bavarian culture that brought everyone together.

While in Munich, I also watched the famous Glockenspiel perform in Marienplatz. Seeing the centuries-old clock come to life while crowds gathered below reminded me just how much history Europe preserves in everyday life.

Morocco: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Adventure

If I had to choose the most adventurous trip of the semester, Morocco would probably take the title.

After crossing from Europe into Africa, everything felt completely different—the architecture, the food, the language, and the culture. It pushed me outside my comfort zone in the best possible way.

The highlight of the trip was spending three days camping in the Sahara Desert.

We rode ATVs across the sand dunes, climbed towering dunes to watch the sunset, rode camels through the desert, and spent evenings around camp under some of the clearest night skies I’ve ever seen. With no city lights around us, the stars seemed endless.

Sleeping in the middle of the Sahara is one of those experiences that’s impossible to fully describe. It’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

Looking Back

When people ask me about studying abroad, they usually want to know what my favorite country was.

The truth is, I can’t pick just one.

Each destination gave me something different. Spain gave me a second home. Germany gave me unforgettable traditions. Morocco gave me adventure. Denmark and Ireland gave me the magic of the holiday season. Italy reminded me of history’s grandeur, and every country along the way expanded my perspective just a little bit more.

Studying abroad wasn’t simply a semester overseas—it was one of the most transformative experiences of my life. It gave me lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and a curiosity to keep exploring the world.

The semester eventually came to an end, but the lessons, experiences, and travel bug are here to stay.
